.
Winnipeg is a great city and I’ve never really understood why some people don’t like it. In my younger years I used to work in the restaurant industry as a server. In the summer we would get a lot of American visitors because the Canadian dollar went so far for them (yes, it was a long time ago). They would ask about what they should visit or where they should go. In the end, they would tell me that I should be working for the tourism industry because it was so obvious that I loved Winnipeg.
So, what was I telling them? Well, here are a couple things that make me love Winnipeg:
1. The Forks
Who doesn’t love The Forks? Great shopping, great food, lots of opportunities for free entertainment. There’s always something going on there. If you have children, the Children’s Museum is right there. Feel like relaxing? Take a boat ride! It’s the kind of place that you go to for the day. And don’t forget to stop off for some of those delicious mini donuts! One great Winnipeg attraction!
2. Osborne Village
This area of Winnipeg is another great place to spend the day. If you like clothes and shoes and purses you’ll find stuff here that you won’t find at the typical mall and many of the items you can buy are made by locals. And the food. Stella’s, Papa George’s, and Baked Expectations are just a few of the places that are worth stopping at.
3. Corydon Avenue
Also known as Little Italy, this strip has some of the best food I’ve ever had! Niko’s is affordable (and one of the few Greek restaurants) and Saffron’s is the place to be at if you want one of the best summer patio’s to be found in the city. And don’t forget to go for gelati for dessert! There are several great gelati stores and they are always busy in the summer!
4. The Manitoba Museum
Whether you are a kid or an adult, the Manitoba Museum will keep you in awe with fabulous displays that will make you feel like you’ve gone back into the past. As a kid I loved that little theatre and the stores that would send my imagination into overdrive and I don’t even get me started on the replica of the Nonsuch. If you have little ones with you make sure to take some time to visit the Science Museum and the Planetarium is entertaining for all ages.
5. Leo Mol Sculpture Garden
In the summer when I wanted to just get away from it all, I would ride my bike to Assiniboine Park (which is awesome in itself) to visit the Leo Mol Sculpture Gardens. This is a place where you can really relax. There are fish ponds, sculptures, plant life, walking paths, and a small museum that house more of Leo Mol’s work. You could zoom through it in 15 minutes if you were in a rush but those with imaginations could easily spend a couple hours there!
6. Old Market Square
This is an area that might be missed by many but it is one of the oldest and most beautiful parts of Winnipeg. The buildings are a photographer’s dream and many couples have taken to having their wedding pictures taken there. The restaurants are fun and full of life. And there is often free entertainment at the Market Square Dome.
7. The Fringe Festival
When I was young and new to Winnipeg, this is one of the first events that I went to. Besides the fact that there is loads of great free entertainment every night and fabulous ethnic food, this is a great opportunity for people to see some wicked plays produced by local talents.
8. The Folk Festival
Every year, Winnipegger’s flock to various venues where they can experience the lifestyles, food, and music of every ethnicity you can imagine. Greet, Italian, Aboriginal, Caribbean, and every other ethnicity you can imagine can be found showing off the things they are known for most.
9. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet
If you love the arts you can’t miss a performance of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. It’s something you’ll never forget.
10. The Centennial Concert Hall
This is where you’ll find the best concerts, operas, and symphony. The sound is amazing and the performances will not disappoint.
I know there is much, much more to love about Winnipeg. What are some of your favorite places and things to do?

As a budding professional photographer, I am well acquainted with just how beautiful the city of Winnipeg can be. Combine that with how friendly the average Winnipegger is, and it equals a fantastic place to live, work, and play. Never mind affordable…
Great article, Danielle!
As someone who grew up in a small town, I’m still thrilled by the conveniences of the city. How many swimming pools and skating rinks do we have around the city, for instance? LOTS!
How many social activities going on that are free to attend via Meetup.com or one of a dozen or more community clubs, or low cost via the Leisure guide?
Heck, my home town didn’t even have an operating movie theatre from the time I was 12 until after I left home at 18!
City life certainly has some nice conveniences!
