Manitoba Museum in downtown Winnipeg attracts visitors from afar

Entertainment, education and enlightenment all rolled into one: the Manitoba Museum has it all! A not-for-profit heritage and science centre, the Manitoba Museum provides an enriching experience for all visitors. It features a number of collections in its heritage galleries, many interactive multimedia shows in the Planetarium and dozens of hands-on exhibits in the special Science Gallery.
The museum details a chronology of Manitoba and world history that goes back millions of years, all neatly packaged into nine interpretive galleries. With more than two million artifacts and specimens available to showcase, the museum is continually rotating its collections so as to have something new for repeat visitors to enjoy. The museum also includes three dimensional walk-through galleries to create a lasting impression of the vast amount of history that we as a society have knowledge of.
Interactive displays provide fun for the whole family
Kids will find the Planetarium to be a real treat. The domed structure is designed to give the illusion of being outside at night and acts as a beautiful illustration of the night sky. Children (and adult space enthusiasts!) can learn all about the latest astronomical discoveries, in addition to legends surrounding constellations and scientific information about the night sky in general. With more than 200 projectors, the Manitoba Museum has the capabilities to show visitors the night sky from anywhere in the world, as well as invite visitors to get an idea of how each of the planets looks up close.
Of equal excitement for children, the Science Gallery allows them to play scientist by conducting experiments on a number of interactive displays. The Science Gallery is a great opportunity for students in grade school to learn about important scientific discoveries while they test them out themselves. Each exhibit includes information outlining how to conduct the experiment, as well as a background of the scientific explanation for it. Touring the Science Gallery will make for an afternoon that your child will never forget!
Celebrating the past, present and future at the Manitoba Museum
Since its inception in 1968, the Manitoba Museum has undergone numerous changes in keeping with its mandate to share new ideas and revolutions in science and technology. Its three-way mission focuses on Knowledge, Collections and Preservation, and Interpretation and Communication. Combining these three core values, the Manitoba Museum helps educate visitors while simultaneously encouraging them to question the way the universe works.
The Manitoba Museum is dedicated to involving school programs and provides a teachers guide and resources section on the website, www.manitobamuseum.ca. Day camps are also available for children in grades 1 – 6 during the spring and summer.
Whether you have children or not, it is worth a visit to downtown Winnipeg to explore everything the Manitoba Museum has to offer. You can choose to explore the museum galleries, Planetarium and Science Gallery on your own or with a guided group or audio tour. No one is too old to make new discoveries at the Manitoba Museum!
