Enjoy the Manitoba Opera in downtown Winnipeg!

As “a non-profit arts organization dedicated to changing people’s lives through the glory of opera,” the Manitoba Opera is the only full-time professional opera company in Manitoba. It is a valuable part of Manitoba’s history since its inception more than 35 years ago, and has delighted audiences from all over the region.

Located in the lower level of Winnipeg’s Concert Hall (555 Main Street in downtown Winnipeg), the Opera is in the heart of the theatre district. The opera company is well-known for its commitment to producing astounding performances, serving Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, Saskatchewan and the Dakotas. Great artists have been discovered and educated at the Manitoba Opera, resulting in a world-class chorus.

Manitoba Opera for teens!

Typical of many organizations in downtown Winnipeg, the Opera is keen to include youths in their mandate. Study Guides for students are offered online, and educators and students alike have only excellent things to say about the opera company’s Student Night at the Opera. In fact, on many areas of the Manitoba Opera’s website, educators note that they have taken their students to the opera multiple times – and their students adore the talent and artistry they see. It is a magical opportunity no matter what your age. The ever-changing shows, which have included in the past The Magic Flute and Madama Butterfly, capture the imagination vividly.

The Manitoba Opera is not only a place to witness extraordinary musical skills, but it is also a place of learning, to produce new performers and encourage youth and adults alike to get in touch with their musical and creative side. Student Night at the Opera is the opportunity for students and educational groups to attend dress rehearsals at reduced prices, so that the opera company becomes more accessible to people from all backgrounds. Its location in downtown Winnipeg is ideal for attracting visitors from all over the city and this part of Canada.

In addition to providing Study Guides, the Opera also offers Composer Bios, Synopses and recommended reading (in the form of books and articles) for anyone interested in getting more in depth with their knowledge and understanding of the opera. Presentations, including music excerpts, are an important part of the new Opera Primer program, which enables the audience to learn more about the background behind the opera performance. In addition, the Manitoba Opera is proud to loan a wide variety of opera-related resources from their library to anyone interested. To really get into the spirit of the opera, you can also purchase a variety of opera-inspired items from their Boutique, including opera glasses, shawls, CDs, DVDs and books.

Tickets to the Manitoba Opera vary considerably, depending on whether you are subscribing for a full season, purchasing as a student etc. Balcony seats can cost as low as $59 per person, reaching up to $260 for an adult seat (no subscription) for the finest seats in the house.

There are other ways to get involved with the opera company, too – volunteering and sponsorship opportunities are both available on the Manitoba Opera website, www.manitobaopera.mb.ca. Take a walk or a drive to the Manitoba Opera in downtown Winnipeg for an evening you’ll never forget!
