Keeping cool in your downtown condo

.

Summertime is blazing hot in Winnipeg, but you can beat the heat and keep cool in your downtown condo – and all across downtown Winnipeg – with some creative ideas! If you are like me, your downtown condo is not equipped with air conditioning. Think that’s a deal breaker on your downtown condo purchase? Think again. Follow these tips and techniques to stay cool and comfortable all summer long:

1)    Invest in standing fans

They may be old school, but they work beautifully. Buy a couple of these, place them strategically around your downtown condo and voila! These standing fans are both energy-efficient and budget-friendly. Go for fans that will rotate so as to get even better circulation around the entire condo.

2)    Open windows in your downtown condo

If you are able to easily open any of the windows in your downtown condo, definitely keep them open. This will bring in lovely fresh air to your living space and it will keep the air moving, which will cool down your home. Close your curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day to keep the heat out.

A bonus to keeping your windows open in the summer is that you will be able to hear bands practicing in the empty warehouses across the street, or performers putting on a show in Old Market Square. Does it get much better than that?

3)    Eat cooling foods

Fill trays with water to make ice cubes, blend frozen fruit to make smoothies and munch on salads at home. Using the stove or oven will only make your place hotter, so experiment more with raw foods or meals which require less cooking.

Stop by the Peasant Cookery for a cocktail in the evening or go out for sushi at Edohei or Yuki when you want to explore your neighbourhood. Or take a walk to the Forks for a frozen yogurt!

4)    Go for a swim

The Downtown YMCA is at a great location (right beside Portage Place) for anyone living or working in the downtown area. The pool is available for leisurely swims and it also has fixed lanes for those who wish to have a more exhilarating experience. Swimming classes such as Aqua Fit are great for young and old alike. You’ll come out of the pool feeling refreshed and ready to go back out into the sun.

5)    Go under or over ground

If you need to get out of your downtown condo and are walking around downtown Winnipeg, taking the underground tunnels or the overpasses is a great way to stay out of the heat. There are even maps at various locations around downtown Winnipeg to show you exactly where those handy passages will take you. You’ll have no problem staying cool if you are indoors, enjoying the malls, the Bay, the MTS Centre and the library – all of which you can reach via the tunnels or overpasses.

It looks as though your downtown condo just got a whole lot cooler!
