How to stay in shape in downtown Winnipeg

.downtown Winnipeg

Not only is downtown Winnipeg rife with restaurants, theatres and art galleries, but it also provides plenty of opportunity for getting fit and staying in shape. For those times when you’ve already broadened your mind extensively through the cultural gems of downtown Winnipeg, take a moment to exercise yourself physically as well. Here are just a few of the ways that you can challenge your body in downtown Winnipeg:

1)    The gym. The YMCA is located at Portage Place and offers a variety of fitness equipment and classes, as well as a swimming pool. It is perfect for students and seniors. GoodLife Fitness, located in the CanWest Building at Portage and Main, is a relatively new gym with brand-new equipment and excellent instructors. Both gyms provide a lot of variety; you can join as a member or pay a drop-in fee if you aren’t planning on going regularly.

2)    Fitness studios. Whether you enjoy boxing, dancing or yoga, there’s something for everyone – and these studios are just a few blocks away from each other in downtown Winnipeg! Pan Am Boxing Club, Motyka Dance Studio and Bikram Yoga are great places to start. If you want to challenge your body and your mind and have a ton of fun while doing it, one of these studios is absolutely the right place for you to go.

3)    Running. Waterfront Drive is a beautiful place for a run, with a trail leading through trees and offering a lovely view of the river and the downtown Winnipeg skyline. Be careful if you choose to run through the streets of downtown Winnipeg, however, as there’s a lot of traffic going through! Many people do choose to run in the area and you won’t have any problems as long as you respect the vehicles and other pedestrians on the streets and sidewalks.

4)    Walking. This is my favourite way to get in shape. Downtown Winnipeg is built for pedestrians, and it is a lovely way to view the old heritage buildings. You can also walk along the river to the Forks and down to Osborne Village from the Exchange District – it’s a scenic route but it also gives you the chance to stop and do a little shopping if you feel like it. In the really cold weather, the underground tunnels and the overpasses in downtown Winnipeg make it possible to keep up with your walking regime.

5)    Playgrounds. Families can bring their children down to any of the smaller playgrounds located in and around the downtown, but the biggest park is the new one on Ellice Street, across from Portage Place. It has plenty of green space and a fun play structure so that kids can get fit too! While your children are running around and climbing over the play structure, consider doing a few chin ups on the monkey bars or play a game of tag with the kids so that you can get a workout out of it.

Whether you’re living here or visiting on the weekend, exercise can still play a prominent part! Fitness opportunities are just one of the many services offered in downtown Winnipeg.
