Downtown Winnipeg: Best Transportation Options for getting around

.downtown Winnipeg

One of the most common misconceptions about downtown Winnipeg is that it is impossible to get around once you’re there. Many people are reluctant to visit downtown Winnipeg simply because they feel uncomfortable about their transportation options: where should I park my car? What if I don’t want to deal with the traffic of driving around the downtown area? How can I get around in Winnipeg if it’s too cold to walk outside? Rest assured that there are plenty of ways to get around downtown that will suit your needs!

  • Driving: Parking is probably the number one reason why most people don’t want to drive to downtown Winnipeg. It can be tough to find a spot to park if you aren’t used to the area. However, there are many parkades, including one in Portage Place and one right beside the University of Winnipeg. New parkades are going up right now in the Exchange District, which will make driving a more accessible option as well.
  • Busing: There are bus stops all over the place in downtown Winnipeg, and what’s more, the buses come through frequently. You can get to just about anywhere in the city on the buses that pass through downtown Winnipeg. If you aren’t in the mood for walking all over the downtown area, hop on a bus and it will carry you to where you need to be in no time. Catch the Downtown Spirit bus for free transit service if you don’t have cash on hand!
  • Taxis: Depending on how far you have to go, taxis can be a fairly inexpensive option. Because of the comings and goings of so many people at all hours of the day and night in downtown Winnipeg, taxis are easy to track down in this part of the city. They are a hassle-free option if you aren’t familiar with downtown Winnipeg.
  • Walking: There’s nothing quite like your own two feet to move around downtown Winnipeg. Vehicle traffic can be rather busy at any time of the day or night, and it can be tough to navigate the one-way streets for anyone who doesn’t know their way around the downtown. Luckily everything you need is within a twenty-minute walk! The buildings are beautiful to look at when you take the time to slow down and walk to your destination.

Even when it’s bitterly cold outside, you can get around easily by foot in the indoor overpasses (you can get from The Bay almost to Portage and Main just from using the overpasses) or the underground tunnels beneath Portage and Main. In the summer, biking is another great option, especially due to the new bike lanes that have been drawn onto some of the streets in downtown Winnipeg.

You don’t necessarily need to have a car in order to experience downtown Winnipeg. Many of the condo buildings in the area don’t come with parking spots, but don’t let that hold you back! With more and more shops opening up and people entering the downtown area, you’ll forget you ever relied on a car. Everything you need is just a short bus ride or walk away – and when you take the bus or walk to your destination, you don’t have to even consider which parkade to choose.
