As you take a stroll down Broadway, passing by the Legislature on one side and admiring the river on the other, you may come across a beautiful building owned and operated by the Manitoba Historical Society. This building is the Dalnavert Museum and Visitor Centre, and it is one of Winnipeg’s Queen Anne Revival architecture buildings. Located just off Broadway at 61 Carlton Street, this historical site offers a unique experience for anyone interested in history, architecture and great beauty.
The Dalnavert Museum is the revived home of Sir John MacDonald – most well-known for being Canada’s first prime minister, but also the Premier of Manitoba in 1900. The museum is decorated in the fashion of 1895.
History Unveiled: Dalnavert Becomes a Museum
Dalnavert was designated a National Historical Site in 1990. It didn’t take long before it was unveiled as a museum and opened to the public: the visitor centre was officially opened in 2005, and it has enjoyed many local Manitobans and tourists visiting the site ever since.
At just a $5 admission fee for adults ($3 for kids, and $12 for a family pass), touring the Dalnavert Museum is a bargain. The beautiful and historic museum is perfect for a rainy day, a birthday celebration or other special event, or even wedding photographs.
Moreover, the Dalnavert Museum also has educational programs put on by the Manitoba Historical Society. Dalnavert presents the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Victorian architecture and life as an upper class family in those times. Consequently, there are school and day care tours available as spring and summer programs. And this year Dalnavert is launching a new program designed to target each age group from grades two to eight, including programs on citizenship, the Industrial Revolution and more.
Volunteer to Get Involved with Local History
The Dalnavert Museum is largely run by enthusiastic and inspiring volunteers. You can have the opportunity to get experience as a tour guide, gift shop cashier, seasonal cleaner, Victorian themes researcher or simply become a member of a committee for the Manitoba Historical Society. As a volunteer, you’ll have a great time meeting others interested in history and heritage sites!
